Abstract
This work shows that missionary priests who arrived to El Salvador in the early 1960s played a key role in the emergence of liberationist Christianity in that country. The missionaries introduced new methodologies of pastoral work, both in the specialized organizations of Catholic Action and in the grassroots communities. They also provided new tools of analysis and interpretation of shared grievances and injustices and of the experiences of oppression experienced in a particularly acute way by the Salvadoran peasantry and the urban poor. Some foreign priests also acted as nodes of connection with the new politico-religious movements in Latin America that advocated an encounter between Marxism and Christianity. The Salvadoran case shows the relevance that the circulation of ecclesiastical personnel between Latin America and Europe had in the development of liberationist Christianity.
