Abstract
This paper highlights the possibilities offered by studying transnational solidarity from the perspective of the sociology of emotions. Taking the Austrian solidarity movement with El Salvador between 1980 and 1992 as an example, the article argues that emotions such as hope, indignation, commitment, admiration, and shame, expressed through testimonies, slogans, denunciatory speeches, symbols, and rituals, played an important role in the processes of recruitment, incorporation, and permanence in the movement. Considering the emotional dimensions of collective action, it is possible to understand the mobilizing force of solidarity and internationalism in certain situations, beyond the rational strategies and political agendas of specific actors. From this perspective, we propose that the decline of the solidarity movement with El Salvador is not only due to the outcome of the civil war and the conflicts within the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front, but also to the change of era in Europe characterized by the rise of neoliberalism and, in the case of Austria, the concentration of foreign policy on integration into the European Union.
